Positive crystal

A birefringent crystal in which the extraordinary refractive index is greater than the ordinary refractive index. Light polarized parallel to the optic axis travels slower than light polarized perpendicular to it. Calcite is an example of a negative crystal, while quartz is a positive crystal.
