Nematicon
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003874
A self-localized light beam, or spatial soliton, that propagates within a nematic liquid crystal medium. The light beam modifies the refractive index of the liquid crystal through reorientation of its molecules, creating a waveguide that guides the beam itself. These structures offer potential for reconfigurable optical devices and all-optical switching.
