Negative crystal

A uniaxial birefringent crystal in which the extraordinary refractive index is lower than the ordinary index, so that light polarized along the optic axis travels faster than light polarized across it. Calcite is the standard example, and quartz is a positive crystal, in which the relation is reversed.
