Total internal reflection

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006083

The complete reflection of a light ray back into its original medium when it strikes the boundary with a less dense medium at an angle of incidence greater than the critical angle. This phenomenon occurs only when light travels from a medium with a higher refractive index to one with a lower refractive index. Optical fibers guide light over long distances using this principle, as do prisms in binoculars and single-lens reflex cameras.
