Total internal reflection
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012133
The phenomenon where an electromagnetic wave, such as light, traveling in a medium encounters an interface with a second medium of lower refractive index at an angle of incidence greater than the critical angle. Instead of refracting into the second medium, the wave is completely reflected back into the first medium. This principle is applied in techniques like total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy.
