Evanescent wave
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004130
A non-propagating electromagnetic field that exists near the interface of two media when light undergoes total internal reflection. This field decays exponentially with distance from the interface and does not carry energy away from the surface. It is commonly employed in attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy.
