Attenuated total reflection

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000929

A phenomenon where an electromagnetic wave, typically infrared light, undergoes total internal reflection at the interface between a high refractive index crystal and a lower refractive index sample. A portion of the evanescent wave penetrates into the sample, allowing for absorption of energy. This technique is widely used in infrared spectroscopy for analyzing opaque or highly absorbing samples.
