Distillation
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001758
A process of separating components from a liquid mixture by selective boiling and condensation, used in refining crude oil and processing other hydrocarbons. The mixture is heated, causing components with lower boiling points to vaporize first; these vapors are then cooled and condensed back into liquid form. Fractional distillation separates crude oil into products like gasoline, kerosene, and diesel fuel based on their boiling point ranges.
