Salt plug
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003232
A temporary wellbore barrier built from a pill of sized salt particles carried in saturated brine, which bridge and pack against the formation or perforations to stop fluid loss. Because the brine is already saturated, the salt grains do not dissolve while pumped. A salt plug is used for zonal isolation, lost circulation control, or a temporary seat during completion work, and it is removed by circulating fresh water or unsaturated brine that dissolves the salt.
