Overburden
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002656
The rock and sediment layers that lie above a target formation in the subsurface. This material exerts pressure on the underlying strata, which influences pore fluid pressures and rock mechanical properties. In drilling operations, the weight of the overburden must be considered when designing casing programs and calculating fracture gradients.
