Strata
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003638
Layers of sedimentary rock or soil with internally consistent characteristics that distinguish them from other layers above and below. Each layer, or stratum, represents a period of deposition, and the sequence of strata provides a record of geological history and depositional settings. The study of these layers, known as stratigraphy, uses principles like the law of superposition, which states that in an undisturbed sequence, older strata lie beneath younger strata.
