Stratum

A single layer of sedimentary rock or soil, distinguishable from the layers above and below it. Each stratum represents a distinct period of deposition and can vary in thickness from a few millimeters to many meters. Geologists use the characteristics of individual strata to interpret past environmental conditions and to map subsurface geological structures relevant to oil and gas exploration.
