Varve

A pair of sedimentary layers, typically deposited annually in glacial lakes, consisting of a coarser, lighter-colored layer formed in summer and a finer, darker layer formed in winter. These distinct layers provide a chronological record of past environmental conditions. Varves are used in paleoclimatology and to determine the age of glacial deposits.
