Octahedral layer
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002585
A structural component of clay minerals, consisting of aluminum or magnesium ions surrounded by six hydroxyl groups or oxygen atoms in an octahedral arrangement. This layer combines with tetrahedral layers to form the basic building blocks of clay mineral sheets. The arrangement of these layers determines the clay's swelling and rheological properties in drilling fluids.
