Clay

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000688

A fine-grained natural earthy material composed primarily of hydrous aluminum phyllosilicates, with particle sizes generally less than 0.004 millimeters. Clay minerals exhibit plasticity when wet and harden upon drying or firing. In petroleum geology, clay content in reservoir rocks can significantly affect porosity, permeability, and well logging responses.
