Shale

A fine-grained, clastic sedimentary rock composed primarily of clay minerals and silt-sized particles, exhibiting fissility or the tendency to split into thin layers parallel to bedding. Shales often form in low-energy depositional environments, such as deep marine or lacustrine settings. They can act as hydrocarbon source rocks or seals.
