Argillaceous
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000177
Describing a rock or sediment that is composed predominantly of clay-sized particles, which are smaller than 0.004 millimeters in diameter. These fine-grained materials accumulate in low-energy environments like deep oceans, lakes, and floodplains. Argillaceous rocks, such as shale and mudstone, are characterized by low permeability and often serve as both hydrocarbon source rocks and seals for petroleum reservoirs.
