Diatomaceous
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001058
Describing a sedimentary rock, sediment, or earth composed primarily of the fossilized siliceous shells of diatoms, which are single-celled algae. These deposits, also known as diatomite, are very fine-grained, porous, and have a low density. In the oil industry, diatomaceous formations can act as unconventional reservoirs, such as the Monterey Formation in California, where oil is trapped within the microporous silica framework.
