Chalk

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000631

A fine-grained, porous limestone composed primarily of the microscopic calcite skeletons of marine plankton called coccolithophores. It forms hydrocarbon reservoirs in certain basins, such as the North Sea, where natural fractures enhance its otherwise low matrix permeability. These fracture systems provide the primary pathways for fluid flow to the wellbore.
