Plankton

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002814

Microscopic organisms, both plant (phytoplankton) and animal (zooplankton), that drift in marine and freshwater environments. When these organisms die and settle on the seafloor, their organic matter can be preserved and, under specific conditions of heat and pressure, transform into hydrocarbons. Plankton are the primary source material for most oil and natural gas deposits.
