Plane wave

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002813

A theoretical wave whose wavefronts are infinite parallel planes and whose direction of propagation is perpendicular to these planes. In seismology, this is a useful approximation for a spherical wave from a distant source, where the curvature of the wavefront is negligible over the area of interest, such as a receiver array. Plane wave decomposition is a processing technique that transforms seismic data into a domain of propagation angle and slowness.
