Benthos

The community of organisms that live on, in, or near the bottom of a body of water, such as the seabed or lakebed. These organisms are categorized as epifauna (living on the surface) or infauna (living within the sediments). Benthic communities are often used as indicators of environmental health in marine and freshwater ecosystems.
