Water bottom roll

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004088

  1. A type of coherent noise in marine seismic data caused by seismic energy that travels horizontally along the seafloor. This slow-traveling ground roll appears as a low-frequency, high-amplitude event that can obscure reflections from deeper geological targets. The noise is characterized by its low velocity, which is close to that of a shear wave in the seabed sediments.

  2. A coherent noise event in marine seismic data caused by the propagation of seismic energy along the seafloor. This low-frequency, high-amplitude wave is a type of guided wave that travels within the water column and the uppermost sediment layers. It can interfere with primary reflections and is typically addressed during seismic data processing through filtering or muting.
