Rayleigh wave
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004433
A type of surface wave that travels along the free surface of a solid, causing particles to move in an elliptical, retrograde motion in the vertical plane. In seismic exploration, these waves are a component of ground roll, a form of coherent noise that can obscure deeper reflections. Rayleigh waves have lower velocities than body waves (P-waves and S-waves) and their amplitude decreases exponentially with depth.
