Ground roll
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001758
A type of high-amplitude, low-frequency coherent noise that propagates along the surface during land seismic acquisition. These surface waves, primarily Rayleigh waves, travel directly from the source to the receivers and can obscure weaker reflections from subsurface targets. On a seismic shot record, ground roll is identifiable by its characteristic low velocity and linear or fanned appearance, and it is removed during data processing using frequency or velocity filters.
