Groundwater

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001759

Water held underground in the soil or in the pores and crevices of rock, occupying the zone of saturation. In petroleum systems, this water is distinct from the connate water originally trapped with the sediments and from the water injected for secondary recovery. The movement and chemistry of groundwater influence hydrocarbon migration and trapping, and its presence must be managed to avoid contaminating freshwater aquifers during drilling and production operations.
