Underground blowout
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003979
An uncontrolled flow of formation fluids from one subsurface zone into another, typically through the wellbore, rather than to the surface. This occurs when well control is lost, and the wellbore provides a path for high-pressure fluids to migrate into a lower-pressure formation. It can lead to reservoir damage and is difficult to detect and control.
