Ram blowout preventer

A mechanical device installed on the wellhead that uses hydraulically actuated rams to seal off the wellbore. These rams can be blind, shear, or pipe rams, designed to close around the drill pipe or completely seal the open hole. It provides a primary means of well control by preventing uncontrolled flow of formation fluids to the surface.
