Blowout preventer

A large, specialized valve or series of valves installed at the wellhead to control wellbore pressure and prevent uncontrolled flow of formation fluids. These devices are designed to seal off the wellbore in an emergency, containing high-pressure gas or fluids. BOPs are mandated by regulatory bodies for all drilling operations.
