Downhole safety valve (DSV)

A subsurface valve installed in the tubing string of a producing well, designed to automatically shut off hydrocarbon flow in the event of an emergency or loss of surface control. It acts as a fail-safe barrier to prevent uncontrolled release of well fluids to the surface. DSVs are mandated by regulatory bodies for offshore wells and certain onshore wells.
