Safety valve

A device that automatically releases pressure from a vessel or system when a preset limit is exceeded, preventing a rupture or catastrophic failure. It is designed to open proportionally to the increase in pressure over the setpoint and closes once the pressure returns to a safe level. Surface safety valves (SSVs) and subsurface safety valves (SSSVs) are specific types used to shut in a well in an emergency.
