Injection well

A well used to force fluids into an underground formation as part of secondary recovery, pressure maintenance, or waste disposal operations. Common injected fluids include water for waterflooding, gas to maintain reservoir pressure, or steam for thermal recovery methods. An injection well is distinct from a production well, which is used to extract hydrocarbons from the reservoir.
