Groundwater

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-012678

1. Water that sinks into the soil, where it may be stored for long times in slowly flowing and slowly renewed underground reservoirs known as "aquifers."

2. The water contained in the pore spaces of saturated geologic media.

3. The water contained in interconnected pores below the water table in an unconfined aquifer or in a confined aquifer.

4. The water found below the surface of the land and contained in the pore spaces of saturated geologic media (sand, gravel). Groundwater is the source of water found in wells and springs.

5. The supply of freshwater under the earth's surface in an aquifer or soil that forms the natural reservoir for man's use.

6. Water that is stored under the earth's surface, in the cracks and spaces between particles of soil, sand and rock.

7. The supply of fresh water found beneath the earth's surface, usually in aquifers, which supply wells and springs. Because groundwater is a major source of drinking water, there is growing concern over contamination from leaching agricultural or industrial pollutants and leaking underground storage tanks.

8. Water found beneath the Earth's surface that fills pores between materials, such as sand, soil, or gravel.

9. Underground water.

10. Water found below the surface of the land, usually in porous rock formations. Ground water is the source of water found in wells and springs and is used frequently for drinking.

11. Water that flows or seeps downward and saturates soil or rock, supplying springs and wells. The upper surface of the saturate zone is called the water table.

12. Water stored underground in rock crevices and in the pores of geologic materials that make up the Earth's crust.

13. In hydrologic terms, water within the earth that supplies wells and springs; water in the zone of saturation where all openings in rocks and soil are filled, the upper surface of which forms the water table.

14. Water below the land surface in a zone of saturation. [40 CFR 258.2 (CFR 2013)] [40 CFR 260.10 (CFR 2013)][40 CFR 270.2 (CFR 2018)][40 CFR 191.12 (CFR 2018)][40 CFR 146.3 (CFR 2018)][40 CFR 144.3 (CFR 2018)]

15. Water below the land surface in the saturated zone.

16. As defined by section 101(12) of CERCLA, means water in a saturated zone or stratum beneath the surface of land or water.

17. Water that is below the land surface and in a saturated zone.

18. The supply of fresh water found beneath the Earth's surface, usually in aquifers, which supply wells and springs.
