Bentonite

A highly absorbent clay mineral, primarily composed of montmorillonite, formed from the alteration of volcanic ash. It is widely used as a drilling fluid additive to increase viscosity, suspend cuttings, and form a filter cake on the borehole wall. Bentonite swells significantly when hydrated, sometimes up to 15 times its dry volume.
