Diesel-oil plug
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001067
A lost-circulation pill made by slurrying dry bentonite in diesel oil, sometimes with cement added, which stays pumpable because the clay cannot hydrate in oil. When the pill meets water in the loss zone, the bentonite swells and stiffens into a plug that seals the thief zone, often followed by a squeeze. Spacers of diesel are pumped before and after it so that it does not meet water inside the drill string.
