Slugging pill
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003467
A batch of mud made heavier than the circulating fluid and pumped into the drill string before a trip out of the hole. When pumping stops, the heavier column in the pipe settles by U-tube effect and drops the fluid level in the string below the rig floor, so pipe is pulled dry and mud is not spilled. The pill does not displace mud from the annulus and is not a swabbing control, which is handled by trip speed and trip-tank monitoring.
