Slug
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003464
A small volume of heavy, high-density mud pumped down the drill pipe ahead of pulling out of the hole. Its weight unbalances the U-tube between the pipe and the annulus, so the mud level inside the pipe falls below the rig floor and the stands come out dry instead of spilling mud. Slug volume is found from the density difference between slug and mud and the length of dry pipe required.
