Dolomitization
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004293
The diagenetic process by which limestone, composed primarily of calcite, is converted into dolomite through the replacement of calcium ions with magnesium ions. This alteration often occurs after deposition and can enhance or reduce the porosity and permeability of the rock, depending on the specific conditions. It is a common process in carbonate reservoirs, influencing their hydrocarbon storage capacity.
