Hard water

Water containing a high concentration of dissolved multivalent cations, primarily calcium and magnesium ions. These ions can interfere with the performance of certain drilling fluid additives, such as bentonite, by causing flocculation or precipitation. Hardness is typically measured in milligrams per liter of calcium carbonate equivalent.
