Magnesium test
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002251
A chemical titration procedure performed on drilling fluid filtrate to determine the concentration of magnesium ions. The test involves adding a buffer and an indicator to a filtrate sample and then titrating with a standardized EDTA solution until a color change occurs. Results, combined with the calcium test, give the total hardness of the filtrate, which is expressed in milligrams per liter or parts per million.
