Matrix

The fine-grained material that fills the spaces between larger grains or clasts in a sedimentary rock, or the groundmass in an igneous rock. In reservoir rocks, the matrix can significantly affect porosity and permeability, influencing fluid flow. Common matrix minerals include clay, silt, and fine-grained carbonate.
