Apparent matrix

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000163

The properties of a rock matrix as inferred from well log measurements, which can differ from the properties of the actual mineral constituents. This discrepancy arises when the formation contains a mix of minerals or when logging tools respond to factors other than the primary matrix rock, such as heavy minerals, clays, or hydrocarbons. For example, the apparent matrix density calculated from a density log in a shaly sandstone will be higher than that of pure quartz.
