Apparent dip

The angle that a geological surface, such as a bedding plane or fault, makes with a horizontal plane when measured in any direction other than perpendicular to the strike. It is always less than or equal to the true dip. Apparent dip is observed in cross-sections or on outcrops not oriented parallel to the true dip direction.
