Matrix

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007027

The collection of all components in a sample except for the specific analyte being measured. These other constituents can interfere with the analytical measurement of the analyte, causing what are known as matrix effects. For example, in the analysis of pesticides in river water, the matrix consists of the water itself along with any dissolved salts, organic matter, and other substances present.
