Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007033

An ionization technique used in mass spectrometry where an analyte is co-crystallized with a large excess of a matrix compound. A laser pulse then irradiates the mixture, causing the matrix to absorb energy, vaporize, and transfer charge to the analyte, producing gas-phase ions. This method is widely used for analyzing large biomolecules such as proteins and polymers.
