Laser desorption ionization
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006458
A process in which a pulsed laser hitting a solid or liquid sample produces gas-phase ions directly. Without a matrix it often fragments organic analytes considerably, which is why matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) was developed for large or labile molecules. Direct laser desorption ionization works well for inorganic materials, metals and strongly absorbing small molecules such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
