Surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011677

An adaptation of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization in which the sample target is coated with chromatographic material, for example ion-exchange, hydrophobic or metal-affinity chemistry, so that only certain proteins or peptides from a mixture stay bound to it. The retained species are desorbed by a laser pulse and analysed by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Its first name was surface-enhanced affinity capture, as opposed to surface-enhanced neat desorption, in which the coating serves only as a desorption surface.
