Dissolved organic matter

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003332

A complex and heterogeneous mixture of organic compounds found in water that have passed through a filter, typically one with a 0.45 micrometer pore size. This material originates from the decomposition of plant and animal matter and influences water chemistry, nutrient cycling, and the transport of pollutants. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is the carbon component of this matter and is used as a quantitative measure.
