Bioturbation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001336
The disturbance of sediment layers by living organisms, primarily through burrowing, feeding, or locomotion. This process mixes and redistributes particles, organic matter, and dissolved substances within the sediment column. Bioturbation significantly influences nutrient cycling, contaminant transport, and the physical structure of aquatic and terrestrial environments.
