Reference sediment

A sediment sample collected from an area known to be uncontaminated or minimally contaminated, used as a baseline for comparison in ecotoxicological studies. It represents the natural background conditions of a particular aquatic environment. This sediment is used to evaluate the toxicity of contaminated sediments or to assess the bioavailability of pollutants.
